Sheriff C. Roy Kelly was shot and killed by two members of the Barker-Karpis Gang while he was investigating a suspicious car. One of the suspects was allegedly responsible for the murder of Chief Manley Jackson, of the Pocahontas Police Department, Arkansas.

Fred Barker, one of the suspects, was later shot and killed by FBI agents in Florida. The second suspect, Alvin Karpis, was apprehended in New Orleans, served 33 years in Federal prison and according to the coroner's report, died of heart related condition in Spain in 1979.
